How Waking Up 5 Minutes Earlier Can Transform Your Life
I know that this sounds way too easy and you’re probably thinking that 5 minutes is nothing and there’s just no way that it can “transform” your life. But that’s exactly what happened to me. And it’s not the actual 5 minutes that made the transformation…it’s what they led to.
So here’s what I mean. I was working a 9-5 job which by the way I miss for a few different reasons, namely my colleagues. And although I enjoyed my job, I noticed that I was feeling like I was living FOR my job. Like I didn’t have much of a personal life outside of those hours at work. I would come home and workout a bit, make dinner, maybe watch a movie with the hubby and then it was time for bed. And scrolling through social media on the couch because I was mentally so tired took up a lot of time too, let’s be real.
So I read up on how to wake up earlier in the morning because I realized that was the time of day where I could have me-time and do things I really enjoyed. Like connecting spiritually, reading, moving my body through yoga or taking a walk, drinking my first of many cups of tea of the day, etc.
And I found lots of tips and tricks, but I quickly realized that I actually had to do the hard part and get up earlier than usual if I wanted to have more time for myself in the morning before work.
So I started with baby steps. Waking up 5 minutes earlier because the idea of waking up a whole hour earlier than usual just demotivated me because I really thought I could never do that. I like to sleep. I love my bed.
And it wasn’t that hard at first in the sense that it was just 5 minutes so my body didn’t see it as a huge change. But I still wanted to hit that snooze button and I did so many times!
I worked my way up to setting my alarm 15 minutes earlier and then I started realizing that I was really seeing the real benefit of this seemingly impossible task.
I witnessed a drop-dead gorgeous sunrise.
I felt the peacefulness of the early morning when the world isn’t awake yet.
I had more time to eat a healthy breakfast that gave me energy and didn’t make me want to snack 2 hours later.
I felt the sun slowly come closer to me on my mat and ended my yoga practice with its warm rays on my face.
I had the time to enjoy my green tea sitting on my comfortable couch instead of sipping it on the go in the car.
I felt my spiritual connection with God becoming deeper and more intimate thanks to this quiet, sacred space I was cultivating.
I handled stress and negativity at work with more patience and positivity.
I began to feel more and more alive.
And one day, I realized that I had just jumped out of bed with actual joy for the first time since I was probably a teenager. Like I couldn’t wait to get up. I was awake BEFORE my alarm.
I didn’t recognize my behavior - but I was so happy about it!
And then a few months later I realized that I was waking up TWO HOURS earlier than I used to wake up. I couldn’t wrap my head around it!
So again, it’s not about what you do in those 5 minutes that is going to transform your life. It’s not about some magical 5 minute rule. It’s about giving yourself the gift of more time for you to experience joy which will then lead to you wanting more and more time and more and more blissful joy in your life.
So, friends - is that something you want? Do you want to reclaim your life?
